Upselling & the Strategy Sell

#How to Upsell Without Being Pushy

Offer it gently, never push
Offer it gently, never push

Don't hard-sell. Present it as part of the natural workflow:

Natural-Workflow Upsell Phrases
  • "Once we finalize the video, would you also like a thumbnail for it? $50 and I can do it in parallel."
  • "Before I send the Phase 2 offer, do you also need a thumbnail for this video?"
  • "The questions you're asking about performance are great - to really answer them properly, I offer a Strategy Document for $250 that covers..."

#Volume / Recurring Client Pricing

For clients who want ongoing work (weekly reels, monthly videos):

  • Discuss volume pricingonce a recurring pattern is established
  • Thumbnails$35/each at 4+
  • Video editinguse the subscription/volume discount structure (see Section 4.14). Maximum combined discount is 30%. Don't offer discounts beyond what the structure allows.
  • Always clarify workflow expectationsbatch vs. individual, turnaround times

#When to Recommend

Wrong deliverableClient asks for thumbnails but real problem is content/positioning.
"High CTR" requestWants "high CTR" without understanding what drives CTR.
Underperforming channelChannel is underperforming.
New channelStarting a new channel.
Brainstorming askAsks for brainstorming/consultation.
Performance questionClient asks "how do you think this will perform?"

#The Two Modes

Designer Mode (without strategy doc)Client tells you what they want, you execute. Creative direction is theirs. You can't speak to performance.
vs
Strategist Mode (with strategy doc)You do the research, find the flaws, drive creative direction based on data. Covers content ideas, structure, pacing, scripting, packaging, titles, thumbnails, SEO, posting cadence.

#How to Frame CTR

Many factors drive one result
Many factors drive one result

CTR is driven by a whole system of factors working together:

The video ideaWhether there's real demand for it.
The titleHow much curiosity it creates.
The thumbnailWhether it stops the scroll.
Autoplay-on-hoverThe first 2-3 seconds.
Channel reputationThe viewer's previous experience with the channel.
Feed contextWhat other videos are surrounding theirs in the feed.
Algorithm testingHow YouTube's algorithm is testing it against other content.
TimingTime of posting and audience activity windows.
Promise vs. payoffWhether the title/thumbnail combo creates an expectation the video delivers on.

Nobody has a secret formula for YouTube. Video is a creative, subjective medium. What works is consistency, iteration, testing, and some luck. The strategy doc stacks the odds in their favor.

#Don't Force It

#Subscriptions & Retainers

The path from one-off order to locked-in recurring revenue:

1
One-off orderdeliver clean, build trust on the first project.
2
Volume / recurring pricingonce a recurring pattern is established, discuss volume rates.
3
Subscriptionper-order delivery (e.g., weekly) with each approval transitioning to the next order in the set.
4
Monthly retainerX deliverables/month at a locked rate, priority turnaround, consistent style, no re-quoting.

#When to Pitch

  1. 1
Pitch at the END of a clean delivery on a CONFIRMED recurring seriesnever cold, never before the client has seen your output
  2. 2
Frame entirely around CLIENT valuefaster turnaround, locked-in rate, priority queue, consistent style, no re-quoting each time
  3. 3
Keep it softplant the seed; let the client lead. "Whenever you and [partner] are thinking about the season ahead, I'd be happy to put together a few options."

#Subscription Mechanics

Per-order deliverySubscription orders deliver per-order (e.g., weekly). Each order's approval transitions to the next order in the set.
Close-out languageSubscription close-outs use the standard 3-option language, but the review is valued at the subscription level (the relationship is already locked).
Watch the renewal windowAs a subscription nears its final order, start warming the renewal conversation. Close it on the final order.
